Read: “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?” My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!” Psalm 42:1-6 (NLT)
Reflect: I love music; lots of different kinds. I play classical, folk, rock and country around the house and in my car. I also love musicals and am inspired when replaying timeless classics from Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera or The Lion King. And could someone please find me tickets to Hamilton?
But there is nothing that compares with the transformative power of worship music. It has lifted my spirits and brought me peace in the darkest hours of my life. It has shaped my life on a weekly basis, by reminding me of the awesome nature of God, of his great love for me, and of his desire to meet me right where I am and take me ever forward toward healing, personal growth and greater peace.
This weekend we were encouraged to re-engage upward as we begin 2018 and one of the best ways to actively engage with God is through music. So why not take a few minutes to check out your personal playlist. Does it need updating? What songs are playing in your heart and head as you go to and from work, putter around your house, walk the beach or do your workouts? What changes would you like to make so that what you are listening to will help you engage with God and bring you forward into a life marked by love, joy and peace?
React: Consider adding the song, “Build My Life” to your personal collection of worship tunes and actively engaging in worship on your own.
Pray: God, I will build my life upon your love, it is a firm foundation. I will put my trust in you alone, and I will not be shaken. (Lyrics from Build My Life.)
