Read: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:1-2 (MSG)

Reflect: This is usually the time of year when I re-evaluate and recalibrate areas of my life for various reasons. In the past, I’ve signed up for expensive gym memberships in the hopes of finally achieving my “goal” weight and being physically transformed. I’ve also resolved to spend less and save more, only to be enticed by the newest trends. I find myself unconsciously conforming to the normative behaviors everyone else is doing because I think it’s good for me. Inevitably, these resolutions don’t stick and I revert back to old habits, finding myself at the end of another year making the same resolutions for the next year.

One area that I definitely want to constantly recalibrate is my relationship with Jesus. And yes, I get derailed in this area too as the days, weeks, and months pass. It’s difficult to stay on track when there are so many distractions – like the gym or some other new thing – that take me away from disciplines which help me stay engaged with Jesus. These distractions cause me to “become so well adjusted to [my] culture that [I] fit into it without even thinking.” I lose sight of Jesus and what he wants me to do. But when I offer my everyday ordinary, “walking-around life” as a living sacrifice, the bible says that this is a true spiritual act of worship. And the promise? I will be changed from the inside out. So, I strive to get back on track, stumbling through all along the way. Nevertheless, I know that Jesus will meet me where I am.

React: Have you resolved to re-engage with and be transformed by Jesus?

Pray: Jesus, thank you for inviting us to re-engage with you. Transform us with your love and help us become more like you.
