Read: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 (NLT)
Reflect: Over the years, our family has been blessed by those with generous hearts. With gratitude for the blessings, it also brings me joy to help others in need. But to be honest, sometimes giving sacrificially puts me in an uncomfortable space. To continue to give during a period of financial strain frightens me. It goes against my drive for self-preservation. Whether it is the loss of a job, an unexpected high cost repair, illness, or bills that seem to quickly pile up; my human tendency is to panic. I freeze because giving sacrificially also means giving up my earthly securities. I am so quick to forget about God’s promises. I tend to forget all the ways he has provided peace and provisions for my family during trying times. Instead of focusing on his voice, presence and wisdom, I analyze the financial picture through my filtered understanding where it seems impossible to be generous.
I have to remind myself, God wants to be a part of it all! He wants us to connect with him in relationship and prayer and guide us through our tight, uncomfortable spaces where we struggle. He wants to encourage and remind us that his promises for a life of peace, security and provision are possible with sacrificial giving. Our giving, no matter how big or small, has an impact not only to those who are in need, but also in transforming our hearts.
React: We are all capable of generous and sacrificial giving. During seasons of financial uncertainty or strain, do you engage God in prayer and guidance? Do you trust in his promises that he will provide?
Pray: Heavenly Father, I pray that your voice and guidance be so familiar that we quickly turn towards you in times of doubt and fear. Help us to be obedient to your will and give sacrificially out of deep love for you, remembering all that you have provided for us. Amen.
