The Joy Choice

Read: “Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:1-6 (NIV)

Reflect: If you look at my social media posts you might think I always have joy in my life; however, that is not the case. Whether it’s a rough day dealing with depression and anxiety, or work circumstances crushing me financially, I can fall into the pattern of only sharing the cool things going on in my life and avoid the “real stuff” of life. The truth is sometimes I have difficulty starting with joy in my day. I know in my mind what joy is and why I should always have it, but sometimes the 1-foot distance from between my head and heart is a mile apart.

One of the things that helps me close that distance is to start the day reading my Bible app and praying. It’s like a joy reset button. Some mornings I just have to force myself to be reminded that God has a good work He’s doing in me, that I DO have purpose, that I CAN have joy in my life, that I WILL make a positive impact on others. I have to make joy a choice. Choose Joy!

Respond: Choose joy this week. I know this may be a struggle, but when praying daily, start with setting your heart in joy mode. Start by giving thanks for what you DO have and extend gratitude for God’s promises of the good work He’s doing in you.

Pray: Lord, this week I choose joy in all circumstances. Even if I have to battle my attitude and emotions, Father help me see the Joy in my life and spread Joy to others this week. Amen.
