Read: “You are like that illuminating light. Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it.” Matthew 5:16 (VOICE)
Reflect: A very close friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. She’s a vibrant, 39-year-old mother of two young children, and I was devastated when she told me the news. She’s always been that friend who has been by my side through good and bad in life, and I have done the same for her. But one thing I had not done was share too much of my spirituality with her. She knew I was a Christian, but we never spoke about anything faith related. I was often hesitant because I did not know if it would turn her away.
Upon learning of her breast cancer diagnosis, God put it on my heart to pray for her daily, and to let her know that I was here for anything that she might need. Although life was busy for both of us, I consistently called, texted, and at times dropped in to her work to bring her treats once she started chemotherapy. As soon as I had the chance to be with her during a treatment, I went, bringing her favorite lunch and a good spirit with me. I could see the happiness in her face when I arrived and I was equally happy to see her. We cried together and also made sure there was plenty of laughter during that visit. At the end of her session, I asked if I could pray for her, not knowing what her reaction would be. What I found was that she was extremely grateful for my offer and she welcomed it with open arms. I believe God put praying with her on my heart that day so I could share my source of hope during this dark season of her life.
React: Have you been afraid that sharing your belief in Jesus could risk your friendships with those who don’t believe the same way? Be aware of the way this fear causes hesitation in showing how God has touched your life or reaching out to those in need of prayer? Be alert to God’s prompting and trust him to give you the right words and the courage to share.
Pray: Lord, help me to shine my light so that I may continue to help others find and follow Jesus.
