Read: “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NLT)
Reflect: This weekend we celebrated the resurrection of our lord and savior Jesus Christ. We were reminded of the incredible sacrifice that our father in heaven made when he sent his one and only son to pay the price for our sins. I memorized John 3:16 as a child, and recited it numerous times throughout my life, but I never really understood the meaning of this verse. It wasn’t until I became a parent for the first time that I really started to understand what the verse truly meant. As a parent of three children, it is difficult for me wrap my brain around the incredible, reckless sacrifice God made for you and me. I cannot even fathom what I would do if I were in God’s shoes (thank goodness this important decision was not left up to me).
One of my favorite worship songs is Reckless Love (of God) by Cory Asbury. The lyrics tell us that God’s love for us is overwhelming, never-ending and reckless. They remind us that he is willing leave the ninety-nine in order to find the one lost soul. God’s love for us is more than our brains could ever comprehend. God gives his love to us freely; we don’t have to earn it. What an amazing gift!
As Christ-followers our mission is to demonstrate this same reckless, godly love to our friends, family and neighbors whenever we have the opportunity. It is important that we are intentional about showing love to others. We do so by providing a helping hand and offering words of encouragement to those in need.
React: God’s love for you is reckless and unimaginable. Think of someone you know who could use some help or encouragement. Make time this week to demonstrate godly love to your family, friends, and neighbors.
Pray: Dear Lord, teach me how to follow your example and show godly love to all who I encounter in my daily life.
