Jesus Is My Strength

Read: “Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, ‘Don’t cry.’

Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, ‘Young man, I say to you, get up!’ The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’ This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.” Luke 7:11-17 (NIV)

Reflect: Luke has written of a funeral in which he states that the mother is a widow. He records the mother’s situation because her son was her only means of financial support. Jesus, upon seeing the widow, knew of her circumstance. His heart was full of compassion and he raised her son from the dead. The news spread quickly and the people in Jesus’ time knew that he was sent by God to help them. The same is true for us today. Jesus will act on our behalf with love and compassion.

My father was very sick for a few months. I asked my growth group to pray for my dad. He passed away when I was flying home to say my last good bye. When I arrived at the hospital to see my dad, he looked very peaceful. I felt Jesus’ love and care for me when I saw that my dad was no longer struggling with his illness. I gathered my family into a circle and we praised God for his life. Because others were praying for me, I was able to minister to my family and support them with love and compassion. The grief of losing my dad was extremely painful but as I grieved I held on to this truth, Jesus has risen and he has conquered death.

We will experience pain and difficulty in our lives. But we know the amazing truth that Jesus died on the cross for us because he loves us! He knows our struggles, he knows our circumstances, and he will give us the eternal hope and strength we need in times of weakness.
