God’s Vision, Our Cross

Read: “Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.” Mark 8:34-35 (NIV)

Reflect: God has more visions than anyone can shake a stick at. Spring was just beginning. I was one year into early retirement and my soul was already yearning for something to do. Turning to prayer, “God,” I asked, “What do you want this servant to do?” NEVER in my life had an answer come so quickly. It was like he was just waiting for me to ask. Only a small portion of his vision was revealed. I saw myself in school writing a curriculum intended for young people. That was it, nothing more.

Two years later with the curriculum in hand, I was trying to find a market for God’s inspired work. Turning to prayer again, “God, If you want me to teach, you will have to provide a place to teach.” Soon after, an invitation to a luncheon at Job Corps yielded an opportunity to teach at Juvenile Hall.

Eight years later, God sent another vision. In it, I saw me retire from teaching at Juvenile Hall and giving my curriculum to Youth For Christ. Fast forward another year and he has me preparing to speak to the freshmen class at a local high school. At this stage in life, I’m loving it. God is keeping me alive with his visions and invitations. Keep them visions coming, Lord and I will keep following you one step at a time!

React: Don’t hesitate to pick up your cross and follow Jesus. Achieving the vision, he has for you, brings great joy and will save your life. Trust me, I know!

Pray: Father God, instill faith in the souls of hesitant followers so they too may receive the full riches of your blessings.
