Read: “Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, ‘It’s a ghost!’ But Jesus spoke to them at once. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘Take courage. I am here!'” Psalm 25:8 (MSG)
Reflect: A couple of weeks ago, I received terrifying news. Two of my daughters were in a car crash. Immediately when I heard the news, I was overcome with panic and fear. I was heartbroken that I was not there to comfort them and to help them navigate through the situation. I felt guilty because I had asked my oldest daughter to pick up her younger sister from church. “I should have been there,” I kept telling myself.
I cried out to God for help, and the Holy Spirit immediately spoke to me in an unmistakable way: “You didn’t need to be there because I was there.” Wow — talk about Seismic! That statement was so very profound and comforting to me. Somehow I had put myself in the place of God by thinking if only I had been there everything would have been okay. He reminded me that although I can’t always be there, he is always there.
Just as Jesus spoke to the disciples in this scripture, we need to take courage in every stressful and fear-invoking situation, because He is here. No matter what is going on, God is with us, and He can calm the raging storms in our lives, no matter how violent they are.
React: Is there a situation you are facing that feels too big for you to handle? God wants to walk through it with you. Ask him. He is always there.
Pray: Lord, I thank you that no matter how big or fearful my situation is, you are here with me. When fearful storms rise up in my life, please help me to remember that I am not alone.
